43. That may be
due, in large part, to our country's failure to recognize that the conflict between various economic and religious factions includes a growing hatred for "the west" in many Asian countries. The US media and public tends to view the conflict as being centered -- hence restricted -- to the Middle East. It is not.

I think DUers do well to read Michael Scheuer's books ("Through Our Enemies' Eyes" and "Imperial Hubris"), not because I endorse the author as a person or agree with his opinions per say. Rather, it is because he provides readers with an interesting view of the global scale of the growing conflicts.

In Imperial Hubris, for example, he lists Islamist cells with Singaporeans and Malaysians (p 87); Bangkok and Bali (p 90); Indonesian militants (p 90); and more.

No matter what people think about "terrorism" -- and there is an interesting range of opinions found on DU -- we do well to recognize that the current world leadership is bringing us towards a violent global conflict.
