The GOP's policies benefit or are geared towards the interests of the top 5% to 10% tops of the population. Which means that theoretically upwards of 80% of republican voters actually vote against their own interests.
A lot of these poor people are actually under the impression that they are going to make it, and thus they don't want to tax the rich or enforce saner fiscal policies. Afterall one day they may be part of that select group of people at the top of the earning pyramid, so they don't want to ruin the "party" upstairs. Unfortunatedly they are too uneducated to understand the laws of probability and what those percentages mean.
I always found it fascinating, that for such a shortsighted society... the whole thinking they are going to make it in the future seems to be a prevalent "long range" assumption among many Americans.
Dumb and proud of it... ain't that genuinely a conservative value.
