This does nothing to support your claim that we can't expect anything else. We certainly can and did with King. He was successful.

Your either/or assertion is evidence of a ridiculous lack of understanding. King and his followers understood that peaceful protest persuaded better. That angry and violent protest were more likely to entrench opposition and promote stereotypes. They knew they would be the sympathetic group to the rest of the nation when the dogs, firehoses, and batons were turned on them.

Even if I were to grant your assertion that there was an either/or scenario. You still need to exhaust the first, peaceful, option before the or.

As for your comment about pre-written guidelines, King and his fellow organizers were the ones that issued their own guidelines to the protesters. They were all asked to sign a pledge of nonviolence in order to march.
