a much reviled early leader of the "new right" faction in Republican politics during the Reagan years
In addition to pushing the agenda of the "new right" a forerunner of today's far right republican politics, he in particular spoke out vociferously against homosexual rights.
Eventually it became known he was a closet case, and died of AIDS a few years later.
The tie to Dolan is philosophical, and if the rumors that were printed during the efforts to impeach Stanford, he's also a closet case.
In fact some McClatchey stories stated that SC political leadership decided to NOT follow through with Stanford's impeachment and removal from office, because then they'd have an even more loathsome (in their eyes) homosexual as governor. Standford for all his "sins" at least committed sins that they saw as natural ones LOL
Now he denies being a homosexual, but those denials haven't stopped the rumors, because he simultaneously shows no evidence of serious involvement with women.
For those that know some about sexuality in the South, it is extremely unusual to have a nice looking man like this guy (give him his due) NOT demonstrate any signs of being a horn dog around women.

in the southern sense, not the general sense that men generally can be horn dogs.
