59. Whenever a new McDonald's or Wal-Mart opens up in

a depressed area, hundreds of people stand in line to apply for the few available jobs. Those jobs are crap and they pay poorly, yet people are desperate to have them. If they could earn a decent living--not even $50/hr, but a decent living--picking lettuce, they would jump at the chance.

Hell, I would jump at the chance to pick lettuce for $50/hr--and I am a 55-year-old teacher of college English!
