287. My letter to Keith Olbermann:
Hello Mr. Olbermann,

As a long time fan of your show and with great respect for you as one of the last real investigative journalists left in the mainstream media, I thought I'd bring to your attention to an egregious falsehood in a congressional campaigner's website. In Howard Kaloogian's website ( www.kaloogianforcongress.com ), there are many photo galleries used for campaigning purposes such as showing his support or affiliation with prominent republicans, his work to curb illegal immigration and his support for the troops. In the 'Supporting the Troops' gallery ( http://www.kaloogianforcongress.com/aboutus.asp?id06=11... this page may take some time to load), in order to bolster his claims that Iraq is a far more peaceful and stable place than the deceitful media would have us believe, he displays a photo which he claims to be of downtown Baghdad. As you'll see, not only does this photo contain no Farsi (rather it contains several words in Turkish), but the architecture and attire are very much removed from what you would expect to encounter in the far from secular Iraq. In the far left of the photo, you see a couple holding hands, and while this in itself is not enough to arise curiosity, the woman's dress would not be acceptable attire on the streets of Iraq, and would most likely invite a great amount of danger for the woman wearing it.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to bring this issue to your attention as their is a very large thread regarding this issue on the website Democratic Underground found here ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... ). I would like to add my voice to theirs and suggest you cover this issue in an episode of Countdown in the near future. I know there are far more pressing issues facing our country right now, but I thought this is a prime example of GOP hypocrisy (not to mention irony) when they would falsify information in order to condemn the media for not giving an accurate portrayal of Iraq. So I would like to nominate Mr. Kaloogian for the Worst Person in the World as Bill O'Reilly surely deserves a break.

Oh, and congratulations on your ratings. Not only does your show cover issues that no other mainstream news outlets will, but it does so with wit and humor sorely lacking from other cable news shows. Your show is the only thing that keeps me watching MSNBC and is the only sign I see that real investigative journalism exists outside of the Internet. Many thanks and keep up the great work.

Kevin

I also sent a very strongly worded letter to the campaign's website demanding a prominently placed retraction on their site. I hope to receive a response.
