For the purpose of being in the habit too. There is nothing wrong with signaling when no one is around or it isn't really necessary. If you always signal, you will be signalling when someone needs to be seeing your intentions.
I don't know why people are too lazy to do it. It isn't like the turn singal is someone where else other than right by the steering wheel and you aren't already driving and all that entails.
