Reply #47: I hunt a lot up here in Alaska

As a matter of fact, my family lives almost exclusively on meat that I shoot or fish that I catch. Moose, caribou, deer, elk, ptarmigan, halibut, salmon, prawns, razor clams........any of the above are likely to be on my menu depending on what night you drop by. I love being outdoors, experiencing the Alaskan Bush, and I like knowing that I harvested the meat that my family is eating. I know where it came from, how it was treated after it was killed, and how it was butchered.

However, there is something absolutey wrong, sick, just totally fucked up about raising an animal in a pen and then "releasing" it to be shot. I have no respect for people who do this, and even though I hunt, I would be all in favor of outlawing the "canned hunting" nonsense.

On Edit: I take my kids out to participate in this, as I see harvesting your own foods very natural, and learning/experiencing nature an incredible thing. Life and death and eating an animal is the way of life. However, if one of my kids seemed to actually relish the killing of animals, I mean getting a thrill out of watching the bodies flop, I think I would discourage them from hunting. I know that there are people who like that aspects of it, but I would not want to be around them.
