Otherwise, you were working seven days a week, with no union, no insurance, no benefits, no vacation time, no retirement, no safety goggles, no guard rails, no helmet, and not even a pair of gloves unless you bought them yourself. You started doing this when you were 13 years old, and you worked until they didn't need you anymore. Step out of line, and the Pinkertons were dumping your family out onto the street.
