Author Charles Sanders speaks at the Vail Symposium in Vail Colorado about the Tenth Mountain Division, a unit of elite troops recruited by The National Ski Patrol during World War II. In "The Boys of Winter," the author focuses on four of its members: Rudy Konieczny, a high-school skiing champion from a working-class New England family, Jacob Nunnemacher, a wealthy Wisconsin skier, Ralph Bromaghin, a talented musician who had climbed Mount Rainier with the Boy Scout sand Joseph Duncan, a recruiter of qualified skiers and mountain men for the division. Mr. Sanders explains that none of the men survived the war and chronicles the hardships they faced in northern Italy near the end of World War II. Includes Q&A.

Charles Sanders is a music industry executive and a music and performing arts professor at New York University.
