These are not your typical "Scut Farkus" type bullies. They are not looking to hurt you. They only crave attention. They are looking to get their ugly mugs and signs on TV, and the only way to do that is to piss you off. Ignoring them in this case is not equivalent to taking a beating at the hands of a thug.
So as long as you continue to gawk and yell and throw stuff, they get what they want - attention.
What would happen if nobody showed up for a counter protest? Noone looked at them as they drove/walked by? It would be just a couple of a-holes standing on the corner. There's no fun in that - you can't spread your message if no one shows to videotape it. They'd be gone in 5 minutes.
If Fred Phelps stands on the corner and no one is there to hear him spout, does he make a sound?
But go ahead, bully them back. You're playing right into their hands.
