Although I agree, 8 years sounds like an awful lot.
I'm sure the law has gotten tougher, but I knew people back in the day who had 2 DUIs in Illinois and got what they used to call "Supervision"- which meant, really nothing. No suspension, nothing.
Lesson #1 there, probably, is "don't act like a prick to the Judge".
