There are PLENTY of ways to rig elections. Just set them on a day when all the little people have to work in the fields. And then there's Stalin's deathless line: "Who votes does not matter. Who counts the vote . . . that matters."
There's no payoff for the Democratic Party to defend Chavez, other than for the same reason the Pub's have to lick his boots - O-I-L.
Chavez started out as a populist, but he's looking like a dictator nowawadays.
