My theory is that those who run around claiming "independence" while showing none at all are people who are particularly unable to think for themselves. I think they have a weak sense of their own values.
For some reason they are also people who expect a candidate or Party to be perfect. They can't just call themselves Democrat or Republican because they support the general drift of one party over another. Again, I think it's having a weak sense of their own values, and needing an outside source to model them.
