He's just INCREDIBLY stupid and inconsiderate. This is why they don't let him speak extempore. He doesn't have the same kind of mind that you do, you know how you'd catch yourself in that word-choice BEFORE it got out of your mouth and change it to " . . . put it on the wall."

Some of the audience were perhaps just surprised by the how extreme this particular stupidity is and, hence, laughed at it. Others may have been embarassed by it; laughter is the most common initial response to embarassment. Others were trying to cover for him; they're the ones we should be concerned about.
