for next wars.

Our military and those of essentially all industrialized nations pride themselves on being apolitical and subject to elected civilian governments.

The Bush administration has tried to change this in a number of ways from purging generals whose advice he didn't like to tacitly allowing the Air Force Academy to become an Evangelical institution, to pumping Fox News and Rush Limbaugh into the troops, but this is wrong.

Instead, the right should use their vast resources to form a Republican Guard to execute their foreign hegemony plan and leave the existing military to actually defend the United States.

Like our existing military, it would be all volunteer, but they could be allowed to have any political, religious, or sexual orientation litmus test they want.

And they should definitely have a unique uniform, maybe like those in Starship Troopers.

They probably already thought of this and calculated exactly how many of their followers would volunteer (zero), which is why they are resorting to much higher priced mercenaries instead.

The good news is support in the military for Bush's policies is declining to the point that we might soon see them refusing to act as shock troops for wars of conquest to enrich Bush's friends, and that will create a new red line no president dare cross, just as after Nixon ended the draft, no president would dare call for bringing it back.
