They're mostly functionally obsolete groups of people, now watching The Old Way Of Life die and themselves with it.
There's also the John Stuart Mill thing- not all politically Right/conservative people are stupid, but stupid people (i.e. lacking adaptive power in a changing world) will be politically Right/conservative.
The Santorum and the media thing: that's all about magical thinking. A hallmark of popular stupidity.
