but I can imagine a lot of my coworkers at Verizon would have been outraged enough to spill the beans if they knew about the database. (If I had had any idea, I might have, too.)

The argument that "it's only phone numbers" is ridiculous. All the former Bell companies have historically been extremely protective of their customers' calling records. Nothing was given without a warrant. That's what shocks me so much. In fact, the closer you were to the old way of doing things, the more appalled you probably are now.
