The passage you speak of is one that is often given by people who don't like public prayer it's as taken out of context much like the idea that god hates gays. In context the scripture address the the need for people to have a personal relationship with God and not to just do it for show. It is actually more aimed at the Fundies who have little "Jesus Fish" on the SUV that lock the door and roll up the window when they she a homeless guy asking for change and pretends he's not there.
