I think many are people who genuinely perceive themselves as "liberal". The word is so devoid of meaning in the US -- for starters, it seems to refer to two entirely separate things: attitude toward restrictions on actions within the individual sphere and attitude toward collective action in the economic / social sphere -- that I don't know how one could know, or assess sincerity.

It does just blow me away that not far off one half of the US population appears to expressly approve of the patriarchal organization of the family, which does indeed suggest approval of patriarchal organization of society's other institutions.
