This just started. They've been installed for over two years with no issues. The dvd-rom is set as the master and the cd-rom is set as the slave. I get a green lights on the drives when a disk is installed but nothing ever happens. When I go into Device Manager I see that both devices have errors and a message that the drivers were loaded but Windows can't find the physical drives.
I'm running Windows XP sp2. I reseated all the cabling and rebooted but nothing changed. I disconnected the power from the cd-rom drive and booted with only the dvd-rom drive but it came up with the same message that the driver loaded but no physical drive was found. I uninstalled the drivers hoping that Windows would pick up the drives on a reboot but that didn't work either.
My next step will be to replace the cable and/or try swapping the cable from the hard drive with the cable from the cd and dvd drives.
