Skin contact will produce caustic irritation or burns due to defatting and saponification of skin oils and destruction of tissue. Any accidental splash onto the skin should be flushed with water immediately.

Get yourself an aloe vera plant. They're cheap and hard to kill. Break off a leaf or part of a leaf and rub the juice over the burn. Pain gone.
