... of the '50s and early '60s when the dominant (though by no means exclusive) lesbian "dating scene" involved butch/femme couples. One lesbian would dress in a masculine (butch) fashion and the other would dress in a more traditional feminine manner. Social roles are much more relaxed today and if you see a masculine looking lesbian, you can be sure she dresses like that because it's how she feels most comfortable. Likewise, if you know someone who dates masculine-appearing women, it's because that's the type she prefers. It's just one more aspect of appearance. Individuals can like someone short or tall, skinny or full-figured, blonde or dark-haired ... or even masculine or feminine.
