A measure of diameter of the size of the bullet.
Caliber is inches. So a .22 caliber is about a quarter inch bullet. A 9 MM is about a 1/3rd inch bullet.
They say .22 is best for home defense and killing because it has a tendency to bounce inside the skull.
A 50 calliber is a half inch thick bullet... That sorta deal.
I'm actually not really much of a gun person, but I own the shotgun, and I play war games online (because nobody dies there) so I have looked up some strange guns on wikipedia.
