With some inexpensive software you can print your own checks.
Or really you don't even need any software in particular, you need the MICR font and something to design the layout in. And the blank check paper is like $9 for a box of sheets you can feed through your home printer.

You can make them say anything you want.

Here's the "why" bit.
One of my lawyers told me that when you order checks, the major check companies compile databases of the bank account information and information about the person ordering the checks, Name and address.
This information is used by debt collectors for garnishments. For the right price, you can find out just about anyone's bank account number. Welcome to America.
