What's wrong with being a radical, with being an extremist?

I notice, on DU, a lot of people are screaming about others being "too extremist" about certain things. The latest being GLBTQ rights. The question I must ask is, is extremism, in itself, wrong?

I would say no, not in itself, but it does depend on what position you take in the first place, is it wrong to be an extremist on civil rights for everybody? I don't think so, when I see an injustice, I oppose it, with every fiber of my being. This could be staked out as a "far left" position, I notice that's a favorite word among self-identified progressives, moderates, liberals, etc.

Same for many other positions I hold, yes, I'm a far left extremist, and I make no apologies for that. I fight for the rights of everyone to live in comfort, in safety, and any way they see fit to live.

I don't put any separation in my thoughts between civil rights and economic justice. I find connections within all, and fight against the injustices perpetuated to all. Why is this to be condemned?

Extremists serve two purposes in society, for those extremists for oppression, they serve as a warning, for the people in the middle to NOT be like them. Extremists for liberation serve a different purpose, to kick the muddled middle in the ass, and start those fucking reforms they are so reluctant to push now. And believe me, right now, it seems the muddled middle needs a good ass kicking right about now.
