11. I'm one of those teachers--long-term sub for a private company.
What's interesting is that I actually work for the sub company, not the district. So, now there's going to be talks between the two about the principal requiring me to attend staff meetings and work extra hours that the contract says I don't get paid for. I get paid for a half day or full day, so any meetings or detentions after school are all free. The company wasn't fully aware of that (until I told them), and they're not okay with my working for free (seeing as they get a cut from what the district pays me), so they're going to be talking with the district about that. I've been informed that I'm not to work extra until given the green light, though I'm going in today to finish my bulletin boards, etc., and just not telling anyone. I have to get them done for Tuesday as well as a few other things, and that's part of my job.

School districts will spend more than they think if they hire through another company. Teachers work many unpaid hours every year, but if the district is paying another company, that company won't take kindly to their employees working for no pay. This isn't the answer the idiots in Lansing think it is.
