This is one of many functions of politics. Politics is called the art of the possible. If you attack religious beliefs, you will accomplish nothing as a politician, because these beliefs are not the provence of the politics of our secular state, and voters will rightly not vote for you. Then you are an ex-politician.

You can be an activist for your atheist cause, however.
