12. All the Abrahamic religions
have sects that are more interested in plumbing the mystery than enforcing doctrinal purity or fighting the infidel. They're the ones least likely to regard outsiders as the big Other. Unfortunately, there's rarely ever enough of them to have an appreciable effect on their parent religion.

Which makes Dubya's hardon for Iran doubly sad. Iran was already on a slow course toward moderation before he gave the hardliners a boost by declaring the country a member of his comic book doom squad. And one indication of liberalization is the popular resurgence of Sufism, with at least 2 to as many as 5 million adherents today, up from a mere 100K at the beginning of Khomeini's era. They comprise a higher percentage of the population than Jews do in the US. That's probably enough of them to make a difference in Iran, but our nuke-happy prez is about to bomb them back into the box.
