I Went to "Bellydance Superstars"

A Miles Copeland brainchild, touring review that hit my area the other night.

The quick (real quick) review: an enjoyable 90 minute show. Of the dozen or so women, however, the majority of them were more about athleticism than dance, ie, amazing moves but very little real style. Two or three were simply fantastic, especially the lady who went by the name of "Sonia."

But here's the kicker: of the 250 or so people who attended, it seemed as though half or more knew each other through a local/regional belly dance scene, it was like some cult, both dancers and drummers.

Towards the end of intermission, a very excited woman sat down in an empty seat by me and started talking to me. She apologized for her hyperactivity and explained (on both her own and the behalf of so many others there) that what we were getting onstage was something they all aspired to, and she'd been a practitioner for over 10 years. Said they were all envious of the women on the tour and wished it was them on the stage.

I asked her if there was no venue locally where they could strut their stuff. "No place reputable," she answered.

Got me to thinking, this could be a real business opportunity, to have a supper club or something.
