intent---ballot images in the DRE. Assuming the scene of the crime is the tabulators-- (in Ohio, because IIRC only 4 counties used DRES), Then the opscanned paper ballots need to be archived as well as the Punchcards.
But they were already recounted and the recount said Bush won.
Why hack one DRE at a time? You write the ballot on the Tabulator workstation--- right? But certainly in the case of Ohio it was tabultors not DREs.
