Calif. GOP backs Arnold for full term

Political observers said that by endorsing now, the party can begin raising money for Schwarzenegger's re-election effort rather than waiting until just five months before the November 2006 contest to promote his bid.

The endorsement was nearly unanimous among the 1,288 delegates to the GOP's spring convention.

GOP California Assemblyman Chuck DeVore seconded the endorsement by referring to a line from Schwarzenegger's Friday speech to party activists in which he likened his agenda to a "train that has left the station."

The governor had advised his opponents to "join and jump on the train, go and stay behind and just wave, or get in front of the train, and you know what happens then."

Schwarzenegger has repeatedly declined to comment on his re-election plans, but his deputy chief of staff, Cassandra Pye, used her remarks to party delegates to thank them "on behalf of my boss" for their endorsement.
