The why of the Ohio-recount matter

by R. Foote

Ohio secretary of state J. Kenneth Blackwell's action clearly indicate he's trying to hide something.

I say this because, if I were secretary of state, and I oversaw an election, and people started accusing my oversight of having been tainted, I would say, "Listen, I have nothing to hide. Go ahead, look under every rug, in every crevice. I won't call up election officials and have them pre-select the 3 percent required for a recount. I will let it be done the way it's supposed to be done - randomly."

I would say all of this and allow things to proceed in this way because I am an honest person who thinks if even one person's right to vote was compromised by bad machinery, lack of machinery, etc., then we should get to the bottom of it.

It is clear that Ohio had many, many problems, one specifically being those pesky long lines in Democratic precincts (never Republican). Why only Democratic precincts, and why such a short supply of voting machines (even less than they had during the primaries in some cases)?

Blackwell keeps trying to make these problems out to be minor. I don't think those people who stood in line in the rain for hours upon hours found them to be so minor.

Why? Now that seems to be the question The Greens are trying to get to the bottom of. Once Blackwell stops the hedging and allows a real recount that follows Ohio law, then we will get to the why.
