Gard travels inside track toward rematch
Wieckert decides against seeking GOP nomination for Kagen’s 8th District seat

By Ed Lowe
Post-Crescent staff writer

APPLETON — Former state Assembly Speaker John Gard appears to be well on his way to an election rematch against U.S. Rep. Steve Kagen, the medical doctor who thwarted his congressional bid in 2006.

Gard, of Suamico, is building a campaign war chest with the help of a team including the longtime chief of staff to former 8th District Rep. Mark Green, R-Green Bay, and some well-publicized support from national party backers.

Meanwhile, the once-bustling field of potential GOP challengers to Kagen, D-Appleton, is starting to resemble a party of one.

Gard’s early national backing may also reflect “the national mood” of GOP leaders hungry to avenge past losses, he said. “They look at the 8th Congressional District as one of the top targets in the country,” Jefferson said.

The national mood for the Republicans might be to avenge past losses, but the national mood for the American people is to get away from Bush's policies. That little worm, Gard, was nothing but a Bush mouthpiece.
