York Daily Record
November 11, 2005

"Philip Avillo, a history professor at York College, has announced that he plans to run for Congress in the 19th Congressional District.
Avillo is now the second Democrat to announce his intention to ultimately challenge U.S. Rep. Todd Platts, R-York County, in the general election next year. Joe Otterbein Jr. of Shrewsbury earlier this year announced his intention to run.

Although the Green and Libertarian parties have put up candidates, no Democrat has challenged Platts in the last two elections.

...His only previous political experience is his time on the York Suburban School Board, where he served for 12 years including seven as president. He's a U.S. Marine veteran of Vietnam, where he flew 70 reconnaissance missions until a bullet wound sent him home with a leg amputated above the knee. During his military service, Avillo earned a Purple Heart, three Air Medals and the Navy Commendation Medal with a Combat V. He has taught at York College since 1975, and has published articles on Congress, the military, and the politics of war and race.
