49. I would use canned responses & staff
for 3 reasons: 1. I can't imagine having so much time & money that I would ever be able to stop door knocking, phoning, or working an event, during a campaign, in order to respond personally to voters' questions. 2. anything that I put on paper is subject to attack and I will have to defend what I say. I am confident I could do so, but if I am defending my ideas, then I am not on message promoting myself. Canned responses are planned as part of the campaign, and usually tested in some way. As a candidate, I would be more comfortable with a response that is planned than in a response that I whip up on my own. 3. If my opposition knew I was answering mail personally, he would enlist as many people as he could to swamp me with mail.

That said, canned responses are better than they used to be ... it's not too difficult to make sure that a constituent doesn't get the same letter twice. (Of course you might get the same letter as your neighbor ... :) )
