What would've resulted was a shootout with probably more people dead if someone in the office was armed.

This guy had no business getting his hands on a gun period and, I read, he was denied a permit for a concealed weapon. I assume if he'd had one he would've shot the guys when they fired him instead of coming back to do it. The issue here is that the guy was able to get a gun anyway; either illegally obtained on the underground or that he went in and purchased a rifle at a sporting goods store. Having guns readily available makes people use them, even those carrying them lawfully. Like the woman who is on trial for shooting at a guy's tires on the expressway in a case of road rage. She had a permit to carry that gun legally and used it illegally.

Ordinary citizens do not need guns. Get rid of the guns entirely; if they aren't available legally or illegally neither 'law abiding citizens' OR criminals can get their hands on them.
