Farm Animals Seized At Peninsula Home

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO -- More than 100 farm animals were seized from a South San Francisco home Tuesday by the Peninsula Humane Society and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animal's Animal Control unit, a spokesman said.

PHS spokesman Scott Delucchi said rescue teams took possession of close to 100 chickens, 11 pygmy goats, a turtle, a pot belly pig, and several rabbits living at 870 Grand Ave. because the animals are living in "filthy, crowded conditions."

"The family there had been practicing Santeria, a religion that involved animal sacrifice," Delucchi said.

It is legal to practice a religion that involves animal sacrifices, according to Delucchi, but the animals have to be housed and cared for humanely. The family was being cited for failing to do that, Delucchi said.
