One of the enduring strategic fallacies on the left is that if center-left and left-center bodies can be broken, people will turn to radical left leadership as their only hope against the right. Communists spent much more time and effort in the first half of the twentieth century trying to break Social-Democratic parties than they did fighting Fascists and Nazis.
Some on the left imagine they can parlay present conditions into the destruction of the whole system of party governance in our political life, and hope to see the Democratic Party destroyed along with the Republicans. It is not going to happen.
