77. Surgeon General is a PR position but here's another smart move I think....
As you know Bobby Jindal is contimplating running for US President in 2010. I think Sanjay Gupta is a highly visible, well known pick and also an Indian American who hasn't hidden his roots (Americanizing his name like Jindal has). Gupta has an appeal to middle america and to the growing Indian population here in this country.
It's not a job that writes policy - more of a PR job of "Stay healthy by doing these healthy things". I am concerned about what Gupta did about Michael Moore's film but I'm willing to give this guy a chance. It's not like he couldn't be replaced.
