The "center" isn't anyone, is not a group of people, it is merely an idea, a hope in the wisdom of compromise with the right wing and their ideas. Those arguing against that are not "hostile" to anything but that idea, and are nor creating an "us versus them" situation.

Those attacking the Left, however, are using a take no prisoners approach, and smearing and insulting their opponents - calling them purists, extremists, and every other name under the sun, and questioning their motives and character. That is shifting the debate from a discussion of ideas to a hostile us versus them feud, as ad hominem attacks and stereotypes and generalizations always will.

The leftists here are for the most part talking about what is wrong with the ideas of compromising with the right wing. Those arguing the other side are for the most part talking about what is wrong with the leftists themselves, and not talking about ideas.
