There have been personal attacks against presidential candidates since 1796. And family members have often been the focus of the press--Rachel Jackson is a vivid example--her husband attributed her early death to the personal attacks in the newspapers. And Lincoln's eldest son was called "The Prince of Rails" and criticized for not donning a Union uniform at the outbreak of war.

I think if Palin and her family had to face the old time newspapermen, they would melt into a shivering pile of goo.
