5. Only if Kerry is angling to end his career
Kerry has 23 years seniority in the Senate. With Ted's illness, Kerry stands to become the senior senator from Mass. That's a lifetime position with lots of perks, no heavy lifting.

SecState would be nice, but would end in a few years -- could end in four, if the GOP savages Obama, which it will surely try to do. Then, where does that leave Kerry. Maybe that's what he wants. Maybe he's looking for a high note on which to retire. I don't really know. If it were me, I'd keep the day job.
