Today, sweet crude hit $135 a barrel.

Yesterday, I watched Sen. Jim Webb on "Morning Joe," as oil hit $130 a barrel, point out to Mika Brezinski that the month we invaded Iraq, oil was $27 a barrel. My jaw dropped.

Gasoline locally here in southwestern Ohio hit $3.99 today, and while that is awful and a hardship, can anyone really imagine what would happen if that price doubled? The closer we inch toward $200 a barrel, the closer we get to $8.00 per gallon of gas.

I think it's high time Obama really addressed the energy issue, and where oil and gas prices were when Bush took office, where they were when we invaded Iraq, and where they are now. I'm not sure the majority of Americans have really made the obvious connection yet, and you'll never see McSame discuss the way our destabilization of the Middle East has affected the price of sweet crude. He'll talk about increasing demand from China and India, but you won't hear him talking about the war in Iraq having an effect, and you sure won't hear him discussing the way oil company profits have risen so disproportionately.

Get it out there. $135 per barrel today. $27 per barrel in March of 2003. Ask your neighbors to think.

I'd like to add this, which I wrote in response to a post by The Magistrate. It lifted my spirits today:

While filling up my gas tank this afternoon, I and every other customer at the tanks were wretching and heaving about the price. It was the first time we hit the $3.99 9/10 mark here in Cincinnati. An impromptu discussion ensued.

A gentleman, senior citizen driving a late-model minivan, said to me, "I need to get me one of those."

I nodded and said, "Yes, it really does get good mileage, even though it now costs me $43.00 to fill up." (I drive a 2000 Acura Integra.)

"No," he said. "One of those." And he pointed to my bumper, and my "Obama '08" sticker.

Events will conspire and Americans will unite. I feel it in my bones. To live in the wingnut bastion of Cincinnati, and to have an older gentleman willing to enthusiastically declare his support for an African-American Democratic candidate is nothing short of earth-shaking in my experience.
