who go by "pet" names. I have a brother-in-law named Barry. Frankly, I don't even remember his given name, whatever it is.
It may not be anything more than common rather than formal usage. Has Barack Obama corrected people when they call him Barry? David is sometimes Davey, Michael is sometimes Mikey, my wife Ellen is sometimes Ellie (although she didn't use that because in college, her roommate was Elinor (Ellie). I'm Allen, but used to be Alvin (changed it legally in 1973) -- but you can call me Al. Thanks.  |
