18. Down here the "code word city" is PalmSprings/CathedralCity
because the Palm Springs area is also very gay-friendly..

Code words are infuriating, because the people who USE them, do so with malevolence, but then feign surprise when they are called on it..and the media always lets them slide..even though they also know full-well what was meant..

So many code words... They literally JUMP out at people who are thoughtful, but sneak into the subconscious of the ignorant :grr:

some I gnash my teeth about:

family values

The sad thing is that it really only matters WHO says these innocuous words, and a lot also depends on context..but many people have grown up with very little education in that area. They are literalists who do not question anything..

When my kids were in school and had to cut out current events from the paper, I would always make them examine the articles to "read between the lines", and try to figure out the message being sent, in addition to what was written..

One vivid example was a local pedestrian accident. The LA Times reported it as a man stepping off the curb, and being hit by a lady .
Our local paper wrote the same story, but they also added that the man was an illegal immigrant who was jaywalking..and the lady who hit him was driving her kids to school in her mini-van.

My boys understood "slant" after that..

The facts of both stories were the same. man hit by vehicle..but the context and slant were very telling.
