he does it *respectfully*.... have you ever noticed how he will say kind things about McCain? Comment on his admirable military record, etc? and then follow up with the things he disagrees with. It's similar to how he discussed Rev. Wright. He recognizes that you can profoundly disagree with someone and still respect their humanity and have an understanding that they are doing the best they can. Does that make sense? This is one of the things I admire the most about him.
Plus this kind of approach is wonderful for winning over voters. It enables them to retain affection and respect for their former candidate even as they switch...
