And they never really considered a "plan B" in case something like this happened. I think even in the past with the raucous conventions, the candidates weren't this close. Just looking on the map, you literally see the clash of "the old" ("big state strategy") versus "the new" ("50-state strategy"), and I really don't think they have a handle on how to interpret it. The Democratic Party is at a (scary, to them) fork in the road right now. The 50-state strategy netted the party enough in both houses of Congress to retake the majority, which was not even predicted (it was anticipated that the Dems might pick up enough seats to take the House but certainly not the Senate).
And note that this is also a year when the primary state election order was changed and I would expect there would always been some upheaval when there is a transition and change in a known process.
Despite this thing about a "freeze", there are still SDs slowly coming out and endorsing.
