19. LaRouche is a first class fruitcake
On a couple of occasions, in 1980 and 1986, LaRouche sponsored ballot initiatives to quarantine AIDS patients. In support of one these, he claimed on television that it was possible that mosquitoes carry the virus.

The man runs as a Democrat because, quite frankly, the Democratic Party is not as well organized as the GOP. In Illinois, also in 1986, he managed to get a couple of his candidates the nomination for statewide office. They didn't have a prayer of winning, but it put the Democrats in the uncomfortable of being all but forced to withdraw support of the party from statewide candidates (who were taking positions like AIDS patients should be quarantined). The problem was a distraction to the Democratic gubernatorial candidate that year, Adlai Stevenson III, who lost to the incumbent Republican, Jim Thompson.
