Why John McCain?

Why has the Republican Party now rallied around John McCain? After Romney dropped out of the race there were two choices left for Republicans, McCain and Huckabee. Huckabee is certainly the more conservative of the two, even to the point of desiring to add a human life amendment and a marriage amendment to the Constitution. Moreover, the largest voting block within the Republican Party is Evangelical Christians, most of whom also desire to use all legislative and judicial avenues necessary to protect human life and traditional marriage. So, why McCain?

It appears that, once again, Republicans’ moral values are easily trumped by their craving for power. Huckabee should be their man based on their professed biblical and moral values, but they believe that McCain has a better chance of winning so they decided to “chuck the Huck” and maintain McCain. This is the same McCain who is known for his outbursts of temper and sailor’s profanity, which are traits that are considered to be sinful in Evangelical circles. He’s also the same McCain who has been viewed as being weak by most conservative Republicans when it comes to issues regarding enforcing America’s border with Mexico, which was supposed to be one of the top concerns for Republicans.

What happened? Just as religious right-wingers regularly allow their love of money to trump their biblical and moral values, which I have documented and written about on this website, we see similar behavior when it comes to their love of power. When they have the choice between shared moral values with Huckabee, or a better chance to win power with McCain, they go for power. So, now it’s “win baby win” with McCain, while Huckabee is relegated to self-deprecating humor on Saturday Night Live.

I guess, on second thought, religious right-wingers are not much different than their most secular opponents. The love of money and power also top the list of their priorities. Those who fear a values-based agenda from the “religious right” can relax. You have nothing to fear if you remember to give them a choice between their values and power or money. They’ll take the power and money nearly every time.
